Question 2 Week 10

Select an ad (pls insert picture) and discuss whether the copywriting approach is ethical.

It is important that the advertiser make sure that they have followed the ethic principles before they publish the advertisement. Most of the issues and problems are generated from who break the ethic principles. Advertisement above is an advertisement of Dermitage skin care product. Below is my analysis of copywriting ethic of this ad.

Using fictitious character for testimonials
The image of this ad is very straightforward. Consumer can directly know that this skin care product is for anti-wrinkle. In this ad, the advertiser had put the comparison picture inside the ad. But, you can see that the effect of the product on this woman skin is too exaggerated. The woman is like transform from old to young. From here, you can confirm that that is just a fictitious character that had edited to this ad.

Exaggerate claim
The ad had used the exaggerated headline which is “Less Wrinkles in Minutes”. Advertisers nowadays only want to show how creative they are and totally ignoring the fact that an ad should be provided to the consumer. It is common sense that it is impossible that any skin care product can directly let the wrinkle disappear in minutes. Normally, consumer need to wait for a few weeks to see the result. This headline has decreased the credibility of the ad.

Truthful Presentation
The advertiser should insert some information that can prove the testimonials, claims and the comparisons of the image in this ad are true. It is important that all of the descriptions, claims and comparisons which relate to matters of objectively ascertainable fact should be capable of substantiation.

Question1 Week 10

Discuss five ethical approaches to copywriting for Malaysian ads.
Copywriting in Malaysia has to be taken cautiously because we are living in a society with a variety of religion and race. Therefore, at all times, copywriter should avoid writing anything that may stir up any issue related to that. Even if it is a joke, it may be very sensitive to the society as most of the people here are still very conservative.

As mentioned above, our country is still very conservative, therefore advertisements should not be printed with any contents that contain any offensive visuals or any forms of vulgarity. This may be a very common method used by the western countries but Malaysia is an Islamic country, therefore all advertisements should be respecting the local culture.

Honesty in advertising. This should not be an ethical approach in Malaysia only but worldwide. Fake advertising may cause a lot of consequences. It may lead to lawsuits if the product/services are far from the promises made in the advertisement. This may be a form of deception to the users.

Comparisons are common, however, a copywriter should be able to differentiate the items that they are comparing. For example, it is ridiculous to compare a Mercedes to a Proton car. Mercedes, known to be a luxurious and high-priced car, it is only fair to compare Mercedes with an equally high-end car such as BMW or Audi.

The content of the copywriting should not be related to fear, superstition, violence or illegality without a justifiable reason as there is no absolute way to filter your readers. You cannot constrict people for not looking at your advertisement if they are below the age of 18 years old. The advertisement may indirectly promote unnecessary illegal acts for readers who do not know how to interpret the message of the advertisement.

There are more than just 5 of these as mentioned above, as a copywriter, there are a lot to consider as you want to produce a creative and not offensive advertisement. Hence, always look through the guidelines to make sure that you are not creating an advertisement which may be against the law.

Question 1 Week 9

Discuss the tips to writing the body copy of an appealing outdoor ad (billboard).

Outdoor ad is an "out-of-home" advertising which is basically it is an ad that can be found in public places, such as in bus station, billboard, walls and more. Outdoor ad is usually used to reach the masses and it is costly. Therefore, the ad has to attract the audiences.

Here are the few tips:
1. Keep it simple.
Audience will be driving or walking when they saw your ad. They only have a few seconds to notice and engage in your ad. So don't make it complicated and pile it with a lot of information. The fewer the world, the bigger the chance they will understand, and it should consists of: an appealing visuals, a catchy headline and the contact info.

2. Use high contrasting color.
Instead of using soft or pastel color, using a bold and a solid color are more visible and noticeable when the audience passed by your ad.

3. Choice of font.
Do avoid using a thin font style as they are barely visible in a long distance. Forget about all the fancy fonts, a thick stroke and a simple style font will do as long as the headline is understandable and memorable. And do mind about the size of the font. The more visible it is, the greater it will be.

4. Communicate with the audiences.
By creating a communicative ad, it will build the connection between the audience and the product. Audiences could feel less bored when they are in the traffic  and it could also build a friendly image for the company.

Question 2 week 9

Poorly written billboard, and tips on how to write a good billboard

A good body copy is organized, it usually starts out fast and stays interesting, it is believable, get noticed but not to be a huge distraction, it stresses and reinforces the main benefits the product has to offer. Firstly, this billboard above has created controversy with overweight people. According to the research I’ve done, many obese people got offended. The owner of the billboard would probably want people to get the direct message which is good, but then this is way to direct. This billboard then was taken down due to complaints.

These people could have come up with better ads. Yes, billboards should start outfast and stay interesting but then I do not think it’s appropriate to stereotype people. For example, the message should involve everyone instead of one specific stereotype. The rule of a good billboard is to get noticed but not to be a huge distraction, this “save the whales” billboard was a huge distraction in a bad way. For example, it should be written to interest people in a good way. Though I agree that this billboard is well organized just that it will be much better with a good body copy.  Well, this poorly written billboard did clearly stress out on its benefits but again, it is just written in a bad way.

Question 2 Week 8

Question : Select ONE interesting product packaging with sufficient amount of copy for its back and front (pls. insert pictures) and critique it.
FRONT
BACK

This is not a bag of donated blood but it is a bag of energy drink. This product is originated from US. I think the packaging is rather interesting, I know that this concept had been locally used but when I looked at the picture of the product what makes it different is how it is made so real like a bag of blood. There are blood finger print seen on the bag. Initially as I was searching for product packaging I did not expect this to be a real drink especially with how they made the colour of the drink so similar to the colour of real blood.

What catches our attention first would be the word 'BLOOD' and alphabet 'B' but when you look into the front copy "similar nutrients to real blood" and "delicious for vampire and humans" though it does not sounds like it makes sense but I guess when it does attract potential customers to buy because it is 'DIFFERENT.' It is unlike Redbull always packed in the tin. It also describes the taste " FANGTASTIC FRUIT PUNCH" this line is really catchy though there is no such word in the dictionary but it is understood that FANGTASTIC comes from FANGS and FANTASTIC. Fangs are the sharp teeth that vampire has. They are trying to relate blood to vampire where it is known that vampire are always energetic and never sleepy.

Meanwhile the back copy is just a standard content of nutrition facts for people to read in case if they're allergy to any of the ingredients. Overall, the packaging and words are well played but due to it's daring packaging there are weakness to it. China has banned this product from entering into their country because the government doubts the food safety due to it's colour which was made with almost the same consistency of blood.

On top of that, I feel that the front body copy was really difficult to read and even though this product is creative being sold in the public seemed to be not appropriate for younger children. If parents do not explain to them they may really believe that human's blood is drinkable.

Question 1 Week 8

Discuss copywriting tips to write an interesting copy for a product's packaging.

It is important that the product's packaging has an interesting and clear copy that easily to be absorbed and understood by the consumer. Now, I will share some tips to write an interesting copy for the product's packaging.

Tip 1 : Use different tones.
Based of the genre of the product, copywriter can use different tones to express the message they want to tell in the copy of the packaging. For example, copywriter can use the cheerful and cute tone to write a copy inside the talking bubble on the toy or cereal's packaging. This kind of tone not only can make the children feel fun and interesting, it also is a way to interact with the children.

Tip 2 : Write the copy briefly.
Even the copywriter insert a lot of information inside the copy, consumer will lazy to read and just ignore it when the information is too much. Therefore, copywriter can provide the copy which is scannable and easy to understand. Copywriter can bold the points, use the nice-looking line breaks or special font. Copywriter also can use some sensitive word or adjective to catch the consumer attention.

Tip 3 : Transform the copy to a story.
Instead of writing a rational and serious copy in the packaging, copywriter can transform the copy to a mini-story to attract the consumer to read it. It is common that the copy of the product's packaging always be written in formal way, so if copywriter can use a story to convey the message they want to give to the consumer. It will create a scenario to the consumer and become more interesting.

Question 2 Week 7

So the ad I chose would be the ad for a pair of JBL Synchros for sale on Lazada. Not much copy can be seen in FB ads in general simply because there is just not enough space to jot down a lot so organizations who opt for this particular brand of advertising must KISS. ( Keep It Short and Sweet ).
For the most part this ad's copy in particular does it justice quite nicely in fact, The discounted pricing of the product is the first thing you'll read shortly after the name of the product or in this case the Headline which is a good thing for online shops like Lazada whom people visit to find cheaper alternatives to otherwise overpriced items of the same kind. It also instantly lets the public know what they will find when clicked on the link which is the continuation of the features of the product. This particular copy follows the rule that one must only say what is needed and not tell excessive stories as people are only interested to read what is interesting to them and nothing else.

Question 1 Week 7

Social media
1. Discuss the features of social media and how these features dictate the copywriting approaches to social media ads.

Social media ads can be easily remembered or easily forgotten by people. Copywriters should take these social media features into account, and use them as their advantage in order to write for social media ads that will attract people.

l Participation
On social media, people are free to express their opinions which contributes to feedback from other people. It creates a platform for participants to be able to express their thoughts and opinions to all sorts of topics. The bigger the topic, the more people will participate in it.

Copywriters can shape their words in a way, that would allow and urge the readers to participate in the ad.

2 Openness
The media encourages people to express their opinions on a public platform, to allow more participation. Activities such as commenting, voting and sharing valuable information are highly encouraged on social media.

Ads written by a copywriter should sound encouraging and friendly towards it’s readers, to allow them to be able to give their opinions on social media.

3 Connection
Social media connects people together, as well as other content from other places to people. It enables conversation between friends and families who are far away from each other, and linking people to different sorts of links and online resources.

Connection must be taken into consideration, as people online like to feel connected to people who are far away from them. Ads can also help people feel connected to each other, and it depends on how the copywriters weave the content of the words of the ad.

4 Community
Communities are form when a group of people of the same interest come together. Social media assists people in forming and finding their communities.

Copywriters must study the different types of communities online, so they can shape their words according to the targeted community’s preferences.

Question 2 week 6

Select an interesting radio or TV commercial and provide your comments by applying copywriting tips for creating a good electronic ad.

This TV commercial is very unique, and that’s because this TV commercial makes the vierwers think of what ad this should be. Honda did it in a way to give viewers a bombshell, to make them wonder “wow, this is something interesting to watch” and this will make viewers want to watch the commercial more. Commercials which are interesting can also make viewers buy that particular product just because of the commercial itself.

Honda did apply the copy writing tips for this commercial. There isn’t any much negative critic on this TV commercial as Honda made the commercial short, simple and understandable. Consumers out there wouldn’t want to watch a commercial which is too draggy as the length of the commercial was just 1 minute, viewers wouldn’t have missed this commercial. The message was short and effective.  Not many sentences have been used as well. As mentioned above, Honda did use USP in this commercial at the ending. Honda also used relevant sound effects in the commercial when each object showed up on screen.  So from my point of view it is a good and interesting ad that public will like it.

Question 1 Week 6

What are the five considerations to effective
copywriting for a radio or TV commercial?

1.      Use short and conversational sentences.
It will be easier for the audience to absorb more information about the product as it conversational and makes it sounds familiar. It is more comfortable for the audience as it is not too serious kind of ads.

2.      Focus on the product’s unique selling points and big idea.
Mentioning about the product’s USP will make the product more stands out as that is the reason of the uniqueness of the product. Big idea as the guidelines on how the radio advertises the product.

3.      End strong with call to action.
After all the facts and story, the ads will be closed with the call to action. The advertiser has to come up with a strong call to action. It is to recommend or advise the audience to giving their respond or do something towards the product.

4.      Use the relevant music and sound effect.
Using a relevant music and sound effect that is related to the ads will give more colors to the ads. But however, do not overdo on the music and sound effect as it could reduce the ads quality.

5.      The length of the ads.
Be good on managing the time. Audiences could not rewind back to the part they missed. Therefore, the announcer could talk in ease without squeezing all the word, however, the announcer still has to manage the time well. Such as, the ad has to stop 0.5 seconds earlier that the ads spot.

QUESTION 2 WEEK 5

Five interesting headlines from various ads and discuss why they are effective.

1.

  • This advertisement is effective with the way it play with words. Obviously, smokers know that smoking causes cancer. Instead of that, the advertiser twist the message around by writing cancer cures smoking. This will definitely get people thinking before they reach to the point to realise that the Cancer Patients and Association is trying to send the message to tell people not to wait to the moment you are diagnosed with cancer and then you stop smoking. Don't let cancer be the reason why you stop smoking.

2.
  • The visual was a great help to enhance the message of the headline. The advertisement was trying to motivate females to workout. Especially for those who went through heartbreaks because of their body. I think many people can relate to this advertisement around the world. It was direct and the best way to make someone regret is obviously to look hotter and fitter than before.

3.

  • Jeep was directing this message to other car brands that are trying to design cars similar to theirs. This headline was also to reemphasis that imitation will never be at a level to be at the same level with the original. They want to be known to be on top for being the most iconic and legendary brand when it comes to SUV.

4.
  • This is a very bold way of writing a headline. However, because of the method of the headline is presented it will attract the viewers to read the body copy to understand more. It provokes curiosity among viewers to read or not to read the book whether what type of book is being advertised and how intense is the content that may cause death.

5.
  • This headline acts as a very strong public service announcement. Many may not be able understand how is it like to live a life at a war zone. With the visual it also strengthens the headline, people living with so much fear that they are taking every step cautiously not knowing what will happen to them next.

Question 1 Week 5

Discuss tips to writing great headlines. Please discuss a few tips we haven't learnt before. AND...don't copy verbatim from Internet sources. Please write those tips with own words. (250 w)

Design a print advertisement, not only emphasize on visual but also the headline as it doesn’t mean the consumer will initiative to read the contents of advertisement after see the attractive design of the advertisement. Headline in the advertisement is very important to catch the reader attention to continue reading the body copy.

Tip 1: Using some exaggerated word to create an exaggerated title that can attract people read the whole headline.  Advertiser also can exaggerate the message that they want to convey to consumers, as consumers will feel more fun and interested to read the advertising. They will feel the headline is exaggerated and curious about if the content of the headline is true.

Tip 2: Advertiser can apply the current trend to the headline. For example, the Gangnam Style, Pokemon Go or PPAP. Advertiser can use some trick to insert this kind of sensitive word into the headline during that trend.  For example, the player who addicted to the Pokemon Go will be attracted to the headline which got mention Pokemon Go this word. As the players maybe will think about if there have some offer to get rare Pokemon.

Tip 3: My third tip is to create a humor for headline. Sometimes the humor not only can create fun, it also is a better and unobvious way to compare the product with one of the competitor. Some of the consumer won’t get the inside meaning of message from this kind of headline if they don’t really understand about the product. And also the humor is difficult to convey an accurate message, as some people will think it is a sarcastic.
