Question 2 Week 2

PSA Advertisement

This advertisement is a public service announcement and the approach of this advertisement is more to the emotional approach. As seen from advertisement's body copy ' With love, Death' this is definitely trying to make smokers feel fearful from taking another puff from the cigarette. "It'll be fun they say" is trying to portray how your acquaintance may influence your decision as they tend cause peer pressure.

Stop smoking campaigns and advertisements created are mostly emotional telling smokers that smoking kills, smoking is bad for lungs. Anyhow, emotional approach may not be able to persuade people not to smoke because in this era, people emphasize more on verifiable truth than ads that just touches their heart.

Instead we can change this advertisement by using more facts and scientific proven experiments. For example, for every puff from the cigarette how much will it damage one's oral, trachea and lungs.

Through the rational advertisement, advertisers can also educate the public about possibility of getting oral cancer. Oral cancer is a silent killer, one normally will not notice about it until it reaches the later stages where it is already at a terminal stage. Advertisers can also state out facts to smokers on the side effects of the second-hand smoke.

Smokers may have not realise that, it is more harmful for second-hand smokers which are people whom take in their exhaled smoke than they, themselves smoking it. According to the U.S Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 2.5million of non-smokers died from health problem due to second-hand smoke. Providing statistics as a part of the advertisement is also another form of approach as numerical is may be more impactful than words.

  1. Smoking is a really bad habit, and a habit which can kill you. More advertisements to prevent smoking is highly encouraged, and should be emotional. What smokers don't realized, is that they are not only putting their lives at risk but the lives of the other people who are around them as well. If ads can invoked a sense of guilt in their emotions, smokers may be able to stop smoking. One of the examples of a very good emotional campaign ad for smoking will be this ad from Thailand. The campaign sends out children to ask for some cigarettes from some adults who are smoking. Surprisingly, the adults who were smoking were advising the children not to smoke and won’t give them any cigarettes. Some of them even gave the children a lecture about how dangerous smoking can be for their health. In the end, the children will pass a note to the smoking adults which says ‘You worry about me. But why don’t you worry about yourself?’ In the end, almost every adult who received the note threw away their cigarettes.

  2. No two ways to slice this cake, smoking does eventually lead to debilitating effects and soon results in the contribution of that person's death. Therefore, with that in mind, Joey's right when she wrote that most smokers do it simply due to peer pressure. But i do like to point out that even-though facts and statistics may help educate the masses on the dangers of smoking an emotional ad appeal should not be dismissed so easily as most people act on instinct and "feelings" alone therefore, its possible that a good mix of both rational and emotional appeal is required to make one super ad that would hopefully curb the rise of smoking trends among the populace

  3. I agree on how emotional approach may not be efficient enough for the smokers to stop. Most smokers won’t stop until they, themselves or people that close to them get the effect. However, as in the ads that Candice shared, many adults told the kids to not to smoke. And i experienced that too, one of my cousin told my brother not to smoke as it’s not good for health and he regretted it too. But he himself is not stopping.

Maybe with a more realistic visual of the ads and as you said putting facts within the ads, it could be giving more impact to the smokers. And one of the good copies that i read is “cancer cures smoker”.
